You can also add Sweet Potatoes, White Potatoes, Onions, Carrots, Mushrooms, etc. to the Brussels Sprouts recipe. Sometimes we do only that for dinner. It's an awesome roasted vegetable spread.

Thanks for the credit G. I feel so respectable!

I agree with Perp - do the porch first. That will be manageable plus it will inspire you to do more because you'll see it every day and be impressed with your activity-ness!
Put some flowering plants on it for Jen.

KFC is SHIT! Everything owned by the Yum coporation should be avoided at all costs for you own good!
No more KFC!!
No more Long John Silvers!!
No more Taco Bell!!
No more Pizza Hut!!

All of these used to be delicious and awesome! Now everything these places serve is a faked, shitty version of what it once was. Obviously it was to cut costs and increase profit, but examine the actual meat these places serve and you should be turned off forever! ESPECIALLY with KFC!!! Everytime I get some chicken at KFC there's a sliver of dried shitty grey meat on the bone. When I go to Bojangles and get a thigh I keep thinking I have to correct them that I didn't want a breast. Thing is, they DID give me the thigh! It just happens to be bigger than a KFC chicken breast! WTF is that!?

FUCK KFC!!!

FUCK YUM Inc.!!!!

I would do the porch first... I dunno what exactly an advent dome is but if it's like christmas advent you might wanna get that going before it's too late.

You could move the books quick depending on motivation for getting rid of them. You could donate them to good will, sell them off in bulk on craigslist, yard sale (you'll be lucky to puch 10% of them...), trade the entire lot to a used book store in exchange for a few newer nicer books or a small sum of cash (good for thrifting with!).

I dunno when cabbages are good to plant and start growing so you might wanna get on that, depending on the window. But if you have time it would be easier to start the pond first so you aren't trampling your garden while you try and dig up your hole (assuming they're in close proximity).

I think your list is missing a number 6, do something sweet for the wifey! I dunno what, but with a week off you could come up with a pretty neat surprise.

What changes are you planning on making to the typical thanksgiving feast line up, due to your sugar aids?

Yeah, lady! I like the idea of shorter workouts with varying intensity. I need to find something for crappier weather. We walked the mall last night, and I am heading out now to do some stores and a lap around the neighborhood, but a concentrated yet still effective workout will be conducive, some nights.

Thanks!

An excellent healthy CONVENIENT "abby normal" lunch option I've discovered is oatmeal. Yeah, wait, I wasn't a fan either; trust me.
Rather than take dr advice for meds, I'm lowering my cholest w/lifestyle changes. Oats is (that just sounds right - "oats" should always be followed by "is!") also tres good for sugar aids! (love the lingo!).
Hating fussy, this is easy. Get good quality thermos (camping dept has metal instead of glass). In the morning, put in 1/2 c oats (DO NOT get instant or quick-cooking; I get the regular-cooking organic ones in Publix health food section); add cinnamon or whatever else you want; pour in 1 c boiling water. Seal that puppy up & by lunch there is cooked, warm oatmeal ready to chow on. Not having been an oatmeal fan, I was surprised how much I liked it. I also put in dried berries or raisins, but I'm sure that's OFF the list for a diabetic. I'm sure you can find something on your "allowables" list to include. I've thought about experimenting with using non-breakfast flavors, too, like savory or spicy; just haven't gotten around to it yet. I just love how super easy it is, along with how healthy. Also a boost to the digestive system, if'n ya know whuddimean.
Very very best wishes, congratulations on your progress & for being a role model!! :)

I just love how super easy it is, along with how healthy. Also a boost to the digestive system, if’n ya know whuddimean.
Very very best wishes, congratulations on your progress & for being a role model!! :)

I like all of these! #1 is my biggest foe! Gotta get that sleep! Much as I love these posts, you could do recaps, when you're able, of the days past.

#2 is what's destroying america. Even what is perceived as the healthy place to eat is serving up highly unhealthy food! There needs to start a trend where cooking in is favored by society, for the benefits of knowing you're having healthy food. If the public showed that's what they want, the industries would be forced to recognize that. The problem probably really comes from our perception of a 'healthy' portion. Just look at a mcdonald's medium versus any other fast food medium.

As far as #3... I've been doing a lot of thrift shopping lately, and I've found Orlando is FILLED with them!! there are good wills all over the place! nevermind salvation army's and other mom and pop clothing consignment shops. Stay away from Plato's closet, that's for the 13-21 crowd. Also men's clothes are always lacking compared to the women's so it's harder for us to find treasures, but I was able to find a nice outfit (dockers pants, nice charcoal button up shirt, square toed dress shoes) all for $15! Plus thrifting is good fun! We always find a little treasure in the trinket section, marble chess sets, seminoles helmet phones, old suit case mini-bars... I'd love to hear the report/rant about the wonders of a thrift shop!

Anyways, stay healthy Geoff!! Love the show!!!

I lost about 50 lbs last year on Weight Watchers (and have successfully kept it off for a whole year). I lost about one shoe size, and my feet got narrower. I was totally unprepared for that!

As for cheaper clothes- Goodwill/ resale/ Salvation Army can get you by as you roll through those decreasing sizes.

My buddy lost a ton of weight, and he had a belt like that he kept on using as a measure of his progress. It wound up going all the way around to his ass crack. Keep up the good work!

Last year, I punched two holes in my belts. But I found the weight I lost! Doh! :P

table salt and sodium aren't the same thing...http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09354.html

and you were at half the daily recommended amount of sodium in that meal...so no real biggie there,

the overall meal was reasonably healthy...drop the gorgonzola crumbs or the greek dressing...

are you using that online site to keep track of your daily food intake...?...or just not enough time in the day

Ditto on the thrifty jeans! Goodwill has an ass ton; like $5 a pair! On the walking shoes, find some online reviews before purchasing.

I have a belt too that I have been punching holes in to wear with my pants that have belt loops. For the ones that don't I have been taking them in at the waist and hoping they look ok. I don't want to shop yet either but I did splurge and got me a "lounge set" in a smaller size that I was wearing and even that is too big. The scale is promising every whatever week I decide to get on it.

Sleep seems to be my issue. I am usually in bed during the week between 9:30 and 10 but never go to sleep until after 11pm and then I am up a few times a night - work nightmares sometimes, loud snoring from the "husband" or I just can't sleep. I know sleep is important and is almost a cureall for a lot of things but I just don't get much of it.

I also got those Sketchers Tone something sneakers since I walk a lot - no car will do that. After wearing them all day and depending on where I have been, my legs are tired. Not painful tired just tired. Great feeling.

Keep up the work little brother!!!! I am ever so proud of you!

I went through 4 "wardrobes" during my weight loss --- you can get some economical "bridge" pieces of your wardrobe --- Kohls.com sells big man Levi's at almost half the price of other places, esp if you watch for their coupons. Also check out the thrift stores.

I also agree on the not eating out... the BEST way to save $ and lose weight. There are a few exceptions out there (Panera breakfast sandwich for example)
Once you hit your goal, then you can add some eating out meals in your maintenance program.

I'm inspired by your tenacity --- keep it up.

I say go ahead and beat yourself up. It's scary, and important not to do it again! You have been doing really amazingly great, and you have to keep it up.

How are you feeling today? Hopefully today is better :)

Anger is replaced by fear. I tested a 115, so I ate some beans and a few bites of squash.

Then sweat, and dizzy, and would have fallen except a shitty futon was there. Tested again. 50.

Now feeling better. Had some cereal, salmon, medication, goat cheese, olive.

Not enjoying Sugar Aids, think I just underdrank water while out today, and if anything else weird happens, I am going to the hospital.

Tomorrow I will be tighter with what I eat.

So you made a mistake. You probably just made a lot of people feel better about themselves, not in a bucket-fulla-crabs pulling anybody close to getting out of the bucket back in way, but that the path you are following is something to which their flawed selves can aspire. Even the Great and Mighty Geoff makes mistakes and a mistake doesn't mean I've failed - it just means I can get back on my pony and keep riding towards a healthy life because hey - that's what the G&M Geoff did.
At least it was an accidental watermelon and not an intentional keg! That is the most impressive thing about this bump in your road.
Oh - and why didn't you have a SoyJoy in your pocket or in the diaper bag while you were festing? Prevention, man, prevention! Think of them as condoms against the Sugar Aids and keep one with you at all times:)

He's Hawt, Jen!
Really - the new attitude towards life, the walking and healthy expedition ideas, the positive attitude, not to mention the 4-sizes too big jeans!

Your couplehood is proof of what I've always believed. Love goes deeper than looks and to loving eyes, the beloved is always beautiful.

Thanks, Xandi. I am doing okay, but cannot wait to get access to a body that can do what you are doing on that elliptical!

Actually, Etchie, I just "blew it out" the whole time at your house. Like a puffer fish. But fluffier!

Thanks so much, belle!

Jen is a rock. Not smoking, eating completely differently, walking, trying new ways of doing everything, and not drinking (she still has a glass or two of wine, surely) were all sprung on her, and she has risen, met, or overcome each challenge me and my con disease throw at her.

It is easy to keep making these changes, because I am seeing benefits, still. Not smoking, drinking, and not being supermorbidlyobese have gotten rid of my apnea. That means no CPAP, no exhaustion, no falling asleep at traffic signals any more.

I am more virile, more active, more affectionate, and more energetic. I move, I help, and I try. I play with Rowan, and I see her light up when I cavort with her. I see Jen's eyes go wide when I tuck in my shirt and reveal another gone pound.

As long as there are benefits, I can sacrifice and make changes. I am coming out of the grave, here, so I do not mind if I get some dirt on my eye or peel back a fingernail or two.

I just want to have the patterns in place when complacency comes along. I have 107 lbs left to lose, and a lifetime of regimen to establish, maintain, and improve upon.

If I do not want to die.

Bee, you do what gets you through! The goal is keeping the number between 70 and 140. Whatever does that, DO THAT! And there is some evidence that wine fights heart disease, which is a number one danger on us Sugar Aids Bears.

You have officially put me into shock. Whilest I don't drink all day every day, I do have my occassional glass of wine (which only took 15 tries to find one I actually like). I do also like my couple of beers if I happen to be invited to a Happy Hour. I know alcohol wreaks havoc even without the SugarAids but now I am even more conscious.

I vow to try and be better. Instead of having four beers I will attempt to sip on one.

Thank you for another eye opener. Keep up the great job you are doing fighting the SugarAids!!

Good job finding the Co-ops! We belong to one here in West Volusia, and it's pretty cool! We get 20% of the co-op price just for sweeping and mopping up the community center where it's held. Our local health food stores also have a 20% off day once a month for customer appreciation. So it takes a little doing You'll find your way! Stick with trying to stay organic with the animal products via sales at Publix on the Greenwise stuff, and be aware of 'the dirty dozen'; try to stay organic with those as closely as possible.

You can get some foods that are un-screwed with in the most unlikely places for a decent price. I have told everybody about the under $5 per pound wild caught Alaskan Salmon, but they also have cage-free organic eggs for $2.12 a dozen.
It is worth the investment (if you have the space) to buy a large freezer and buy meat by the side from a local producer so you know exactly what you're getting.
If your neighborhood is unrestricted you could have a chicken coop:)

Oh, I know that depressing feeling when you look at the prices at that store. I would so love to do all of the grocery shopping there. I would feel so, well, wholesome.

I know that organic food costs more because its more labor intensive to produce a good crop without pesticides and crap than it is to grow them with it. However, I think they should charge for the chemical content instead of the goodness content. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

By the way, this is the perfect time of year to grow your own salad greens! They don't rot in the cooler weather.

I loved it there, and not all the prices were bad... but some were shocking! You're right, Sean, it takes really looking at it.
I did like looking at where each product was from, if it was farmed or not, free range, etc!

Same goes with those links... I like the 2nd two options as it's more "shopping" for what they have that week. Some of the prices are more than Publix but knowing it's local, fresh, etc feels good :)

I guess it's all about shopping smart. It's hard to shop on a budget, I know how easy it is to get the 99 cent boxed crap from the store. Finding the middle ground :)

Dear Food Gods,
I will be very good, I promise, and honor every lovely morsel that graces my palate. Please, PLEASE bring me a WholeFoods to Lynn Haven. And thank you very much for the organic dairy and their milks, cheese and butter.
Oh, and winning the lottery or having someone proclaim us geniuses worthy of mucho dinero so I and friends can afford to shop with impunity at WF would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

As you know we shop there quite a bit and it definitely takes some effort to not go broke. The first thing is sticking to the store brand stuff. The prices are, for the most part, comparable to name brand stuff at Publix. I usually don't buy meat or fish there unless it is on sale. For example this Friday they are having a sale on cooked shrimp...$5.99 a pound. http://fb.me/LI21b8We

But thanks for the info on the co-ops...I will be passing the info along to the veggies...maybe I can save some money on veggies.

Grilled beets! That just sounds teh nom! We will try that. I have found that I like roasted veggies like green beans with garlic or brussels sprouts, asparagus. Very different flavor adventure:)
Oh - and the smoking. You may be tempted but just stand next to someonw who is smoking and breathe deeply. That should turn you right off - or smell someone's clothes when they've been smoking. GAH! I can't stand smoky bars anymore, even

"crazyfat" and "buttsechs" are just two more reasons I love to read your blog! But mostly it's knowing that you are on to the fact that you can heal your body with the right food! You absolutely CAN. You're living it and breathing it, and it's the most wonderful thing to see!

You talked about eating 7 veggies a day. It IS a real challenge! Here's something to think about when you're chewing them: The brain produces a shiteload of the feel-good neurotransmitters when we vigorously crunch them! Win-win! Another way to get your veggies is to put some greens into a blender with a little carrot, a little apple, and drink your veggies. It is very convenient! We are also big fans of Green Vibrance, a powdered greens you mix with juice to get vital greens in that way, too. It's a wonderful product avail at health food stores. Check it out; it's impressive stuff. Freeze dried food. But still food! Greens, greens, and more greens...they do soooo much. But they help restore balance and cleanse the toxins on their way through the system. Processed foods literally leave traces and deposits in our blood! Greens helps to clean them out! So while they say to aim for the full rainbow spectrum of colors in our daily diets, green is perhaps queen! xo

But mostly it’s knowing that you are on to the fact that you can heal your body with the right food! You absolutely CAN. You’re living it and breathing it, and it’s the most wonderful thing to see!

You talked about eating 7 veggies a day. It IS a real challenge! Here’s something to think about when you’re chewing them: The brain produces a shiteload of the feel-good neurotransmitters when we vigorously crunch them! Win-win! Another way to get your veggies is to put some greens into a blender with a little carrot, a little apple, and drink your veggies. It is very convenient! We are also big fans of Green Vibrance, a powdered greens you mix with juice to get vital greens in that way, too. It’s a wonderful product avail at health food stores. Check it out; it’s impressive stuff. Freeze dried food. But still food! Greens, greens, and more greens…they do soooo much. But they help restore balance and cleanse the toxins on their way through the system. Processed foods literally leave traces and deposits in our blood! Greens helps to clean them out! So while they say to aim for the full rainbow spectrum of colors in our daily diets, green is perhaps queen! xo

Any time a person is working to make themselves healthier, it's a damned good thing. You know the deal, and I totally see where you are coming from on the cardboard tip. I am a spice slut, and even I get to a point where I have exhausted the positive effects of cumin, cayenne, chili powder, seaweed, paprika, old bay, bam!, fresh garlic, and basil and oregano and chives and coriander (but NEVER cilantro!) and $affron and thyme and rosemary, sage, marjoram, parsley, mint, dill (I just like the WORD dillweed!), and on and on...

At that point, I usually will go hunt up some new food. That's how we discovered grilled beets, and I have been missing that since we had it!

Thanks again for your advice!

I used to watch Food TV (TOO much, though now I wish I had cable just for the Cooking Channel, I hear its good!), and Travel Channel. I remember seeing Anthony Bourdain or Alton Brown checking out the Japanese Fish Markets, or San Francisco, or Brazil, or Viet Nam, and just staring at baskets and baskets and baskets of the fresh wet good stuff. MAN, I would love to have access to that!

I wonder if they ever look at me and say, "Man, wish we had some BP Oil Soaked Oysters and Redfish!"

Probably not!

Thanks, Perp! I certainly did stay out of it, which amazes me. Last three years, I would have eaten at least 100 peanut butter cups over the course of Halloween. So glad I stayed away from it! One down, two to go!

I think I was "hungry" craving nutrients, a balance of healthy fats, protein, and less simple carbos. I have a theory, it involves yeast, specifically yeast and my blood, but I am still reading about it.

I still get hungry, but since I eat five or six times a day, and I try to always give myself protein+minimal carb and toss in vegetables, various nuts, seeds, beans, certain fruits, the occasional olives, sometimes slices of turkey or roasted meat wrapped around vegetables, or salad. My breads are usually whole wheat wraps, or whole grain toast (rye, oat, or wheat, want to try millet next time!)

You know, I would eat 2 chicken sandwiches, a fish sandwich, a whopper, fries, or a whole pizza, or the Giant sub at Jersey Mike's, or 4 plates of buffet, ANY day.

I really do not know why. I am not complaining. I know I "cheated" to quit smoking with a drug, but I also worry that the craving for those will one day appear. I will kill me if I listen to that particular song again.

I am so glad you are eating healthily and not eating stuff that falls into the "non-food" category. I have long thought it wasn't a good idea to give a body things it can't really identify, hence my embrace of real butter adn rejection of sodas (as a rule), diet or not.
My problem is that I really like food. Even healthy food. I can eat a lot of it. Seven servings of vegetables is just 3.5 cups. I can do that in one meal:)
I am cooking and eating as cleanly as possible (processed items at an extreme minimum) and trying to cut back on my portions. That's my reason for using Sensa - to go from eating two or more of every healthy thing on the table to just one serving. The very act of sprinkling the stuff on my food is a reminder to savor each bite and not inhale.
The big "sell" on things like Sensa and Healthe Trim is the promise of eating the same crap that got your fat ass where it is. I know that is unhealthy and unrealistic and not the way I want to live. I also don't want to live on 800 calories a day of cardboard. Food is a source of creativity and joy for me, a part of the bounty of living.
So until I get my self control back into the driver's seat, I'll eat healthy stuff (only less) with Sensa. Yes, it is a crutch, but this is the way I stopped smoking, too, and I am five years free as of February 2011.

Oh fish oh fish put it on my dish!!! Down in Queens where I was born and bred, there are fish markets all over the place (well were). I would go and pick all kinds of fish. Blue, Butter, Porgies, Whiting, Snapper, Mackrel. All fresh and prepped however the hell I wanted them - heads off, tails on, some filet. I miss that. When I go now I try to bring a cooler with me so I can stop and stock up. I know fresh is better than frozen but hey what is a chick to do?? I like the shrimp, dungeness crab, blue crab, lobster, and scallops if cooked right. Not big on the clams, mussels, or oysters - daddy used to feed them to me on the half shell raw with hotsauce and lemon juice. After awhile they started reminding me of being sick. I need to move to a place where I can get fresh fish all the time. Maine??? Maryland?? HMMMMM....

I love your posts - from the ones when you feel positive to the ones where you feel negative. The cool thing about you is that you are not quitting this battle. Every day you learn....you evolve so to speak. You are broadening your scope of all things food and eating. And whilest you are getting big in the knowledge of getting healthy you are dropping those pounds like an aneroxic teen. I envy you, I cheer you on, I am way proud to say I know this dude named Geoff.....

When you do get to those last few pounds that you want to lose I know good and damn well you won't sink into some lame ass depression or funk and eat a half of a Hostess Bakery. I know by then you will walk that extra mile and add that extra serving or two of veggies to your plate.

I take my hat off to you.

Orlando Wetlands Park is a neat walk but be prepared. The trails consist of berms that divide the water into sections and therefore is all in the open. Bring plenty of water to carry and don't forget the sunscreen. Bring binoculars if you have them. There is a large variety of birds and other wildlife to see as well as the native flowers as plants. BEWARE of the gators! we have had numerous numbers of them pop up on the berm near us while walking and as I said you are on a berm surrounded by water. Tammy and I have hiked a lot of parks and trails around the area so if you're looking for company (on a Sunday) give us a shout. We'd love to join you.

I went to that lake eola thing last year. there's this one booth (actually there were 3 or 4 of em) that sold almost strictly glittery magic wands and tiaras. They were literally the cheapest of base star wands and plastic tiaras with curled ribbon and sprinkled glitter. The wands were $5 the tiaras $8. they couldn't have cost fifty cents each to make! All three of these booths were slammed and every little girl I saw had one! Now THAT's how you make money at those events!

I envy you your Lake Eola walk this weekend! My parent firm used to meet every quarter at the Embassy Suites downtown and Lake Eola's restaurants and sidewalks were ours for a few days every 3 months.
What kind of beans are you snarfing down these days?
We are being good with having weekly salmon but our diet still needs some improvement. I need to get motivated and you are certainly providing some motivation with your excellent weight loss and increased activity!
You are defnitely getting the most out of our one 'E' ticket ride:)

Listen... I think you have great info. But I need you to break a line.

I just cannot get my blurry eyes to do it. I try, I really do!

I took 3 laps around the pool, and looked like a tard. Should have filmed it. On lap three, I stepped on the metal ring that the pool divider would go on, if my pool were not illegal. It hurt like a hot knife in my arch. I will be walking in a line from here on out.

Dude, the cake is gone. Tawna and I sat and read the post together and loved that everything went so well with you and everyone else. Most impressive when reading this blog entry would have to be the two readings you snuck away to check on. You blood-sugar ninja! Nobody suspected! At least I had no idea. I think the most entertaining part of the evening was getting to know you better through conversation (which was the idea). After thinking about it, Jericho does cover the neighborhood but only represents one entrance. If you lived near the beginning of the neighborhood than for a year or so, you lived one street down from me. I said it that night and I'll say it again: We have to do this again!

I also can't believe I didn't think of this until Tawna mentioned this a couple minutes ago but, my sister used to work for Diamond Crystal and experimented heavily with Splenda recipes. She won an award for one of them. I'll have to see if she still has some recipes.

I'm glad you had fun! Wait until next time when I make Pad Thai with tofu! It's soooo much fun to cook for people who are willing to try things! Next time I will do one rice dish and "nine" veggie dishes, hehehe.

I'll try some more sugar-aids friendly foods...I should watch my sugar a little bit more since I'm hypoglycemic...and Etchie needs more veggies in his diet...period. lol
