I was reading and found that, while diet, meds and exercise can and surely do dictate how severe your Type II diabetes becomes, genetics alone offer the golden ticket ride on the Blood Sugar Express.

My mother (she’s often down in the comments, wave “hi” if you see her) has Type II diabetes. Before I was diagnosed, I had been complaining about my overall health, bemoaning the thirst, and urination, and exhaustion… She would patiently listen, and tell me to hit the doctor, or let her hit it with the finger stab one time, and I would say. “no.” She’d shrug, and say the offer was there.

See, I knew something was wrong. It wasn’t Chantix, or quitting smoking, or the unseasonably hot summer that was eating me from the inside. It was CANCER, or DIABETES, or BOTH, or SOMETHING EVEN MORE HORRIBLE.

And I did not want to hear that, because that meant serious change, or unchangeable seriousness.

It was only when my reality continued to spiral down into juice addiction – sometimes 3 bottles of Simply-brand in one day… anything, apple, orange, lemonade, or a Sam’s Club sized jug of grape juice, or 6 cans of Dr. Pepper, or a gallon of sweet tea… and spent a week constipated, then a week diarrhetic, then a week constipated, all the while aching…

When I finally did allow her to test my finger, a few visits later, I maybe did not expect such a definite answer. I would not look at the numbers, but I heard them quietly spoken from across the room. 478, hole-punched.

My mind swam, and still does, when I consider the enormity. But I’m handling it.

If you DO see my Mom, tell her thanks for saving my life. Because without her quiet, patient insistence, I might have swam on down the chocolate factory river, drinking deep, and rotting my organs with sugary poison.

Mom's the word

Thanks, Mom.

In this, their finest hour, the guys talked about food, the internet, and TV… It’s much more than it sounds, trust me.

It’s that time of year again, kids go back to school, seasonal places start shutting down, and Geoff goes out of town a lot.

It’s usually good work, him being out of town. It just is hard being in a new place. At first glance, it looks like your choices for food are Taco Bell, Some Fancy Shmancy joint, and another Taco Bell. Even with the apps used between the two iPhones on the trip, it’s not always easy to find a good place to eat.

But leave it to Geoff to be resourceful and find some damn good food when he was out of town! If you don’t already, follow his twitter so you can make sure and not miss out on the many pics from his trips. This time he found a seafood looking sailboat and wood plank filled diner that served an awesome looking breakfast. And for dinner, he found a Cuban place that sold Ox Tail! He got it, of course. I was instantly curious, morbidly so, but could not find a local place that serves this. Gotta get his resources!

So has your mom joined facebook? Mine has. So far it’s been ok but I don’t think about her being on there and who knows what I might say one day. She found out Rowan took her first steps on FB, oops. Then again, I don’t have to email her pics separately anymore at least.

And finally, a sad farewell to a beloved show, Reading Rainbow. They have not kept the contract for the upcoming year. I did find out, though, that we have 2 PBS stations while looking for Reading Rainbow here.

But the real issue for me was when I saw them say that the focus is no longer on getting kids to enjoy to read but just how to read. Why can’t we do both? Seriously, all great to know how to read but if you don’t love it you’ll never use it! Whereas if you LOVE to read, you’ll figure out how sooner or later! And maybe it is time for a new show but to hear that the “focus” for children’s TV has switched? Not enlarged, not encompassed, but switched? I mean we have 80 bajillion channels, hell I have 2 PBS stations not including the Noggins or whatever they are! I think there’s room for both in our lives.

SomaCow Media, Inc. is proud to present SomaCow, brought to you in this hour by your mom. We love your mom, often.

In this hour, we enjoyed a sweet poem to ex-producer-one-day-soon-mom Jen, Ross joined us on Mic while Mickey was away, and Subway hogged our meats.

moooooooom

Hope you guys did something nice for your Moms this Mother’s Day. Jen insisted that, even though she has never birthed an actual child, she somehow deserves mommy day privileges and should receive mommy day treatment. I say Nay Nay! It isn’t a matter of what she has been through. I am sure walking around, bloated with my offspring flimmering around inside of her has been hectic. But Mother’s Day is for birthers, for women that have stood ankle deep in a sea of unwashed grubby little crumbsnatchers, and kept it together. You don’t get to be a champion prize fighter because you walked up to the ring, right? Damn right.

I mean, can I help it if I planned out this infection so well to fall after Mother’s Day, yet before Father’s Day? I am a genius and that can not be helped.

So what did you do for your mother?

J wrote his mother a poem. I returned, in kind, with a free verse aria to my own mother born out of K-Mart experiences from my youth. Thanks mom.

Ross realized he, too, had not gotten anything for his wife. Help!

It is a short episode, as we all looked across the Martini Room at each other and realized we needed a quick trip to the mall. So enjoy, and we’ll see you back here on Wednesday. Join us next weekend at Ustream for our live show from 2-5 PM Eastern and Happy Mother’s Day to all!
